The ASCE New Orleans Branch was founded in 1962 and is a member of ASCE National, Region 5, Louisiana Section. The New Orleans Branch consists of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area and includes the parishes of Orleans, Jefferson, Lafourche, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, Terrebonne and Washington. The ASCE New Orleans Branch currently serves over 770 ASCE Members. The New Orleans Branch is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes a President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Directors. You can read more about each committee on their respective web pages. The New Orleans Branch provides civil engineers with professional development oppurtunities throughout the course of the year. The Branch reguarly provides luncheon meetings with presentations provided by local and state agencies and/or engineers six months a year. The presentation topics generally rotate through various disciplines including structural, geotechncial, water resources, environmental and transportation. The Structural Engineering Institute New Orleans Chapter regulary provides evening technical seminars monthly and features both local and out of town presentations on structural design and/or codes. Every July, the New Orleans Branch and its Awards Committee hosts the annual New Orleans Branch Awards presentation. Distinguished engineers from the local branch our honored in several categories and local lifetime members are recognized. New Orleans Branch awardees are then nominated for the state section awards in their respective categories. Every year in September, the ASCE New Orleans Branch co-hosts the Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference & Show, formerly known as the Fall Conference, with the ACI Louisiana Chapter. The conference features technical presentations and exhibitors from the New Orleans area and from around the Southeast US region. Technical presentation include structures, geotechncial, transportation, water resources, environmental, project management and ethics. Proceeds from the conference fund the majority of the outreach activities for both the local ASCE branch and ACI chapter. Our outreach and public relations activities serve to promote civil engineering to local prospective students and to the general public. Each year, Outreach & Student Activies Committee supports Mathcounts, the GNO Science Fair, the kids booth at Jazzfest and is always looking for additional ways to provide fun and inviting math and science experiences to the kids. The Public Relations Committee investigates innovative ways to promote positve acomplishments of the local civil engineering community with the New Orleans Area and Southeast Louisiana general public. Recent examples are a television ad featuring local civil engineering projects, billboards featuring the replacement I-10 twin spans and publishing the annaul New Orleans Branch awards recipients in local papers, including the Times Picayune. ASCE was founded in 1852 to serve the civil engineers of our growing country and the New Orleans Branch continues this tradition for the civil and environmental engineering community of New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana. |
