The Outreach and Student Activities Committee supports the New Orleans Branch in its mission to expose students and potential future civil engineers to the civil engineering experience. The outreach committee works with LES-NO to sponsor and volunteer at the annual mathcounts at UNO each year in February. Mathcounts is a national math enrichments, coaching and competition program that supports middle school mathematics achievement. The outreach committee also supports the Greater New Orleans (Region IX) Science & Engineering Fair. This fair is one of the largest science fairs in Louisiana and is recognized as one of the most outstanding fairs in the nation. The fair typically involves more thatn 300 students in grades 7 through 12 from schools in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes. The outreach committee provides judges for the overall fair competition as well as category judging for civil engineering. Similarly, the ASCE-SEI-NO group also provides category judging for structural engineering. Both the ASCE New Orleans Branch and SEI New Orleans Chapter sponsor awards for the top three awards winners in the junior and senior divisions for civil engineering and structural engineering, respectively. The outreach committee also sponsors a kids booth and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. At the booth, children are encouraged to play civil engineer by building a block city. This is a popular event every year for volunteers. Other activities the outreach committee would like to participate include Zoom into Engineering activities. The Outreach and Student Activities Committee is constantly in need of volunteers and open to any new ideas. Anyone interested in participating with the committee should contact the chair, Norma Jean Mattei, Ph.D., P.E. |
