ASCE New Orleans Branch Members & Subscribers:
The National Engineers Week Foundation is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering careers among young students and by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. Engineers Week, February 19-25, 2012, also raises public understanding and appreciation of engineers' contributions to society.
On February 25th, 2012, the New Orleans Branch of ASCE will commemorate eWeek by sponsoring a service project at City Park, followed by a guided field trip of the Huey P. Long Bridge project, hosted by Louisiana TIMED Mangers (LTM). A bus will pick us up from City Park, and take us to a briefing at the LTM offices followed by a tour of the construction site, where members of the design and construction team who have worked on the project will explain various aspects of this amazing structure. The Huey P. Long Bridge has been designated as an ASCE Historic Landmark in a ceremony, which will be celebrated in September. Please take into account that the tour will entail some walking uphill. We will meet at the Volunteer Cabin at 1009 Harrison Avenue at 8:30, board the bus about noon, and should be back by 4:00. Please wear old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Tools and gloves will be provided for the work at City Park. Please bring a hardhat, safety glasses and a work vest if you have them available – please help us determine how many extras are needed by letting us know when you RSVP if you have a vest and hardhat. Lunch and drinks will be provided. 2 PDH’s will be awarded for attending the tour.
In order to make sure we have enough transportation and equipment, please RSVP to Meg Adams at megadams@cox.net no later than February 12, 2012. We may not be able to accommodate those who RSVP after that time. Please fill out the attached form to reserve your spot.
