 | - Reminder - ASCE New Orleans Branch Members & Subscribers: The ASCE New Orleans Branch Presents Hurricane & Storm Damage Risk Reduction System: Bridge Abutment and Floodwall Tie-ins at Causeway Bridge
In order to complete the Hurricane Risk Reduction System on the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain, the low spot at Causeway Blvd must be addressed. Following construction on adjacent levees, this low spot will be further pronounced. In order to complete this project, several alternatives were investigated, including, earthen levee, mechanical gate, and structural T-wall. The preferred alternative is the T-wall. This construction project will present unique challenges as it will require that the T-wall be constructed in an area beneath a commuting artery which cannot be interrupted. As planned, construction will rarely reduce traffic below existing capacity (there will always be two Causeway Bridge lanes open in each direction during peak traffic).
