The new $14 million Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) facility is located near the I-10 and I-610 split and officially opened November 2, 2009. It houses the traffic engineering arm of District 02 of the Department of Transportation and Development and the Regional Planning Commission for Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Tammany Parishes. State-of-the-art cameras, viewing screens and variable message signs are designed to monitor and direct regional roadway operations year round and during periods of congestion and hurricane evacuation.. Emergency management staffing and capabilities will be presented. The technical presentation will highlight the role of the New Orleans Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) in the implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the New Orleans region. After introducing the participants to the basics of ITS, the discussion will focus on development of the RTMC, traffic management activities and other operations conducted and envisioned for implementation there, and the vital role of interagency cooperation in making the center a success. Also discussed will be the unique role of the Regional Planning Commission in linking their planning and multimodal activities with RTMC operations in order to provide a safer and more efficient transportation network for users of all types.
