Presents

HELPING HANDS

ASFE/The Geoprofessional Business Association, will be holding it’s annual spring meeting for 2010 in New Orleans on the 15th through the 17th of April.  ASFE’s president and a former president of the ASCE New Orleans Branch, David Lourie, P.E., in conjunction with ASFE’s staff and other volunteers have organized a service project for attendees to be held the day before the start of the conference on April 14th.  This event, dubbed Helping Hands, will provide attendees an opportunity to give back to the community, help the less fortunate that were impacted by hurricane Katrina, and it will allow engineers to demonstrate leadership in the community.  Volunteers will be helping with the St. Bernard Project, an independent, not-for-profit organization that helps families who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina. With support from more than 15,000 volunteers and 5,000 donors, The St. Bernard Project rebuilds and builds homes so that people have affordable, safe, and sustainable housing.  ASFE is asking for a local partnership with ASCE to garner as many volunteers for this worthy cause as possible.

Volunteers will literally help rebuild a family’s home. This may include hanging insulation or sheetrock, mudding/spackling, sanding, texturing, priming, painting, laying floors, and/or hanging trim, doors, and baseboard. You can work at a pace that is comfortable for you. And there will be the opportunity to most likely choose the task that fits your skills and interest. Details for the event can be found at ASFE - Helping Hands
