GNOSEF LogoNew Orleans (NOLA) - ASCE New Orleans Branch and SEI New Orleans Chapter recognized 14 students for outstanding work in the areas of Civil and Structural Engineering at the 2009 Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair. Additionally, nine teachers were recognized for their efforts to encourage engineering topics in the classroom and science fair. The award recipeints are listed as follows.

Junior Division - ASCE-NO Awards

1st Place, Civil Engineering - Michael Maldonado, Christian Brothers, Teacher Bro. Laurence Konersmann, Which Material Work Best in a Levee?

2nd Place, Civil Engineering - Richard August, Mitchell Fillinger & Dashawn Renard, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, Teacher MiWha Fontenot, Rebuilding Our Wetlands Through River Diversions.

Note that New Orleans Geoligical Society aslo awarded Destin Bailey with 2nd place recognition.

3rd Place, Civil Engineering - Amanda Poissant & Peyton Russo, T.H. Harris Middle School, Teacher Don Shannon, Earthquakes: Shake Rattle and Roll.

 

 

Junior Division - SEI-NO Awards

1st Place, Structural Engineering - Destin Bailey, Ruppel Academy, Teacher Michelle Leonard, Does the Design Effect the Strength of a Bridge?

Note that Soceity of American Military Engineers New Orleans Post aslo awarded Destin Bailey with 2nd place recognition.

2nd Place Structural Engineering - Nicolas James, T.H.Harris Middle School, Teacher Don Shannon, Lay Low: How They Engineer Buildings to Withstand Natural Disasters.

Senior Division - ASCE-NO Awards

1st Place, Civil Engineering - Jessica Kelly, Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, Teacher Janell Simpson, The effect of wind on model structures modified for post-Katrina building codes.

Note that Jessica Kelly also won 2nd Place in the Category Award for Engineering-Materials and Bioengineering.

2nd Place, Civil Engineering - Clara Kornovich & Amanda Justrabo, Benjamin Franklin High School, Teacher David Ferris, The Effect of Red-Light Cameras on the Decelleration Rate of Cars.

Note that Clara Kornovich and Amanda Justrabo won 2nd Place for overall Team Projects.

3rd Place, Civil Engineering - Jessica Wray, Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, Teacher Susan Stephens, How Safe is our drinking water compared to EPA standards?

Note that Jessica Wray won 3rd Place in the Category Award for Environmental Sciences and was recognized by the Women for a Better Louisiana.

 

 

Senior Division - SEI-NO Awards

1st Place, Structural Engineering - Gavin Pitre, John Curtis Christian, Teacher Cathy Boucvalt, "Wood" You Believe it? Note that Gavin Pitrealso won 3rd Place in the Category Award for Engineering-Materials and Bioengineering.

2nd Place Structural Engineering - Ashley Spooner, Ursuline Academy, Teacher Matt Lopez, What's In Your Concrete?

Note that Ashley Spooner was one of two Grand Award winners for the fair, was recognized by I-SWEEEP: International Sustainable World (Energy, Engineering & Environment) Projects with the Sustainability Award, won 1st Place in the Category Award for Engineering-Materials and Bioengineering, was awarded 2nd place recognition by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing New Orleans Section and additionally recognized by the Society Of Women Engineers Greater New Orleans Section, the National Society Of Professional Engineers and the United States Air Force.
