Baton Rouge, La. (ASCE-LA) - It is a pleasure for the Section’s leadership to announce that Norma Jean Mattei, PE, is elected ASCE Region 5 Director-Elect. After the polls for the 2008 ASCE national election closed August 13, 2008, the ASCE elected leadership was notified of the national election results August 15, 2008 by an email notice from Patrick J. Natale, ASCE Secretary. The election results of particular interest to Louisiana Section members was the election for the Region 5 Director for which Mattei, the Louisiana Section’s current Region 5 Governor, was a candidate. Mattei was elected to a 2-year term as the Region 5 Director 2008-2010.

Mattei is a past president of the New Orleans Branch and of the Louisiana Section and she is currently serving a second full term as the Section’s Governor on the ASCE Region 5 Board of Governors after having served a partial term as the Section’s first Governor. She is currently active in the New Orleans Branch and serves as the Chair of its Outreach Committee and she is also an active member of the Executive Committee of the Branch’s Structural Engineering Institute New Orleans Chapter. Mattei also serves on the steering committee for the 2008 Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference and Show sponsored by the New Orleans Branch and the Louisiana Chapter of the American Concrete Institute. She is a member of the national ASCE Committee on Diversity and Women in Civil Engineering.

Mattei is an Associate Professor employed in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the University of New Orleans. She was recently appointed by the Governor of Louisiana to a 6-year term on the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board that regulates the engineering profession in Louisiana.
