Design - Build Delivery

Penobscot Narrows & I-35W St. Anthony Falls Bridges

This new 2,120 cable-stayed bridge has a 1,160' main span and is adjacent to Fort Knox, which was built from Maine granite in the mid-1800's. Project included quick replacement of a historic suspension bridge, meeting the economic development needs of coastal Maine and providing an attractive and durable structure were all goals of the design team. The result is a cable-stayed bridge with two pylons and a hybrid plane of stays, along with a three level observatory platform in the western pylon. The observatory is accessed by pathways from historic Fort Knox, located adjacent to the bridge, and an elevator in the core of the pylon. Construction was completed in just 42 months - through an innovative owner-facilitated design/build process.

I-35W St. Anthony Falls Bridge (Minnesota) – A value based design-build project resulting in the the new award winning project. Project includes the emergency replacement of ten-lane interstate bridge on congested urban site. The 1,223’ structures feature a 504’ main span over the Mississippi River. The approaches were cast-in-place while the main span is precast. The design/build project included a FIGG Bridge Design Charette TM during which participants selected aesthetic aspects of the design. The bridge opened to traffic just 339 days after Notice to Proceed and more than three months ahead of schedule.
