The 2010 Region IX Annual Science and Engineering Fair

The Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) is one of the oldest such fairs in the nation, as 2005 marked the Fair's 50th anniversary. It is held annually and is affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.  The Fair is open to any student attending middle or high school in the New Orleans four-parish-area which includes Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes. Entrants fall into two divisions: Junior Division is middle school students (6-8 grade), Senior Division is high school students (9-12 grade).  Category winners at the GNOSEF are eligible to compete for state honors at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair held at Louisiana State University.  For more information on the GNOSEF, please visit their website.

Every year, the ASCE New Orleans Branch and the Structural Engineering Institute each sponsor special local awards for the GNO Science and Engineering Fair.  The two organizations judge students in both the Junior and Senior Divisions for projects that show research or development in the field of civil and/or structural engineering.  Students selected for these awards do not promote unless placed as a category winner by the fairs judges, however do receive recognition from a professional society and win a cash prize.  An article recognizing the 2009 ASCE and SEI science fair winners can be found here.

This year, the fair will be held from March 17th through the 19th.  The ASCE New Orleans Branch is looking for two volunteers to participate in judging the civil engineering special award.  Judging will take place on Wednesday, March 17th from 9:00am till 2:30pm.  The fair is held at the University of New Orleans main campus.
