ASD AND LRFD CODE FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION AND UPCOMING CHANGES IN WOOD-FRAME CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS/SPECIFICATIONS
The National Design Specifications (NDS) for Wood Construction published in 2005 includes both ASD and LRFD and offers the design engineer the option of using either of the design methods. The presentation will provide an overview of both ASD and LRFD Codes and a comparison of these methods using design examples. The examples will include different timber members and a variety of timber connections. The participants will gain a better understanding of how to use both ASD and LRFD Codes for wood design and how LRFD compares to ASD. The benefits of using LRFD for wood are highlighted. The differences between the 2001 NDS and 2005 are also discussed.
The second part of the presentation will cover the various upcoming changes that are planned in the wood-frame construction standards/specifications and their impact on design of wood structures. The rationale for the changes and the schedule for implementation of the changes will also be discussed:
